Sources of energy

[This section is still in note form]

Energy use: the value, cost and pervasiveness of electricty; natural gas, coal, charcoal, wood.

Most electrical energy is produced by heating water until it boils and then using the pressure resulting from the water vapour (steam) to turn a turbine. Traditionally, coal, lignite, peat, mineral oil and natural gas have been used to heat the water. Since the 1950s, nuclear fission has also been used to heat the water. More recently, a variety of more novel combustible materials have been experimented with to heat the water, such as straw and pollarded willow.
